How to control Feelings

Something I get asked often is "How can I control my feelings ? ". I'm trying to answer this question from my understanding. Think of traveling in a car. When we want to change the direction we are going, what do we do? We rotate the wheel. And how do we do that? Do we rotate the wheel directly or do we turn the steering and that rotates the wheels? We turn the steering and that rotates the wheel.
Now think of your feelings as the wheel of the car. And your thoughts are the steering wheel. We can't change the direction of the wheel directly, same as that we can not change our feelings directly. As we turn the steering wheel to rotate the wheel we have to change our thoughts to change how we feel. Cause our brains don't know the thing he is feeling, is actually happening or the subconscious mind is thinking of that.
When someone says I'm feeling sad or I'm feeling bad, the first thing I ask is what happened if they say nothing I ask what's on your mind. Most of the time people reply "nothing" at first. After a few minutes, they come up with "Ohh I'm thinking of this". This happens because they are not consciously thinking of that but they are thinking of that subconsciously.
At the end what I want to say is, if you want to change how you feel you have to change what you are thinking and change that. There is a line in "Big Hero 6" "Look for another angle". I'd say "Look from a different angle".
This is another one of my weird analogy. Let me know if I said something wrong.
